Founding of Nu Fonix

Nu Fonix is allegedly the new home world of the Space-Nuns, settled after the destruction of Phonics. Its location, not to mention its existence, is the subject of much debate.

Flight from Nu Fonix

Most believe that when the Space-Nuns evacuated Phonics, they were led by the radical visionary (and former orphan) Cho Gayjara.

Cho, the adorable little orphan

Cho Gayjara and the Orphan-Nun Alliance

Cho believed that everything should be spelled phonetically, and it disturbed him that they very word "phonics" failed to meet this criterion. His distress eventually festered into fevered obsession, leading him and his band of orphans to burn dictionaries in an attempt to "purify" language by starting over.

Such acts, combined with Cho's habit of insisting on using phonetic spelling, led to rising tensions between his followers and the Spelling Freaks. During the turmoil and deteriorating social stability caused by the Siege of Phonics, these tensions erupted into violence. Bands of Spelling Freaks roamed the streets, indiscriminately bludgeoning orphans with dictionaries. Although the orphans attempted to retaliate, they were largely unsuccessful, having borne the brunt of Dino-Naut raids.

The orphans' plight caught the attention of the Space-Nuns, who began patrolling the streets to keep them clear of Spelling Freaks. Any Freak caught with a dictionary was hit on the hands with a ruler, and given a stern talking-to. Since Freaks rely on authority figures for validation, the anti-Orphan Freak movement was quickly demoralized and began to disintegrate. Even after the Freak threat became minimal, Cho Gayjara maintained close ties with the Nuns, who admired his charisma and ability to give hope to young orphans.

Cho Gayjara turned 18 just before the final Dino-Naut assault on (and subsequent occupation of) Phonics, thereby losing his orphan-hood. However, he remained an influential figure in orphan circles.

Siege of Phonics

In the final months of the Siege of Phonics, Dino-Naut squadrons were able to attack most areas with impunity, and began establishing planet-side forward command posts as early as 3 BDP. By 1 BDP, only a few heavily fortified compounds remained under Phonics control. Postponing his vendetta against Phonics authorities to fight "the eviler of two evils," Cho joined one of the urban militia, and quickly gained the respect of his comrades. However, his relationships with superior officers were poor, to say the least. Cho openly criticized what he considered to be their "suicidally close-minded textbook tactics." Following the mysterious death of the compound commander, Cho, despite not being the ranking officer, seized command of the unit. In a bold move, he withdrew all his forces from the apparent safety of the compound, claiming, "When faced with overwhelming odds, defensive tactics merely make the army a convenient target, to be destroyed at leisure." His famous "As Long as We're Screwed, Let's Pass on Some STDs" speech proved prophetic when CapsLock-Class BattleTypers reinforced the Dino-Naut armada, and effortlessly obliterated the remaining compounds from orbit in early 0 BDP.

However, Cho's ragtag unit was quickly becoming an elite guerrilla force, striking at Dino-Naut command posts and disappearing into the urban jungle before the enemy could respond. Given the scope of the Dino-Naut invasion, Cho ultimately could do no more than annoy the Dino-Nauts; his attacks are of little direct historical significance. However, his experience in guerrilla warfare would later prove invaluable.

Destruction of Phonics and the Exodus

Cho leads to the Orphans out of Phonics

Space-Nun spies tipped Cho off to the Semantics Gestapo's desperate decision to destroy Phonics in order to prevent its substantial natural resources from falling into Dino-Naut custody. Taking advantage of the distraction a llama landing provided, a coalition of Nuns, orphans, and Cho's forces managed to capture a docked Shift-Class BattleTyper. The ship's speed and maneuverability allowed the coalition to evade the unsuspecting orbiting Dino-Naut armada.

After the escape, there has been little reliable information concerning the Cho and his companions. Conditions on the Shift-Class BattleTyper would have been crowded, and many orphans and nuns undoubtedly died during the long journey.

Founding and Early History

Although nothing is certain, evidence has emerged suggesting what may have become of the Nuns, orphans, and Cho.

Anti-Dino-Naut Guerrilla War

In 22 AP, the Semantics Gestapo announced that a mysterious force was harassing Dino-Naut supply lines and outlying colonies. Data recovered from a captured Dino-Naut Space-Submersible flight recorder shows the "mysterious force" using tactics remarkably similar to those used by Cho, adapted for space warfare.

In 27 AP, a three-way skirmish broke out when a Dino-Naut raid on a Gestapo space station was itself attacked by forces allegedly belonging to Cho and the Space-Nuns. One of the mysterious force's pilots, a woman wearing a black-and-white uniform, was captured. However, she secured her release by whapping the commanding officer with a ruler and giving him a stern talking-to. The commanding officer apologized, and provided her with a personal NumLock-Class BattleTyper for transportation. Since the Gestapo never had the chance to interrogate her, one can only speculate as whether or not she was a Space Nun.

The commanding officer, who expressed confusion and embarrassment over the incident, was summarily executed by an incredulous Gestapo operative.

In 35 AP, a man claiming to be Cho, flanked by several women in black and white uniforms, held a press conference on a planet its inhabitants called "Nu Fonix." He said, "Yes, she was a Nun, and uh... this is Nu Fonix. Currently fourth planet in the Reading System. Right next to where the old place used to be. We came here after Phonics was destroyed, and haven't exactly been trying to hide. What are you, retarded?"

Most experts, though, agree that the press conference was a hoax. First, the man was at least in his fifties, and looked nothing like confirmed photos of Cho, the orphan we all know and love. Second, he claimed that Nu Fonix is the "fourth planet in the Reading System"; however, this is clearly impossible, since Phonics IV was destroyed.

Rumors of Cho Gayjara's Death

Rumors of Cho's death began to circulate after the man claiming to be Cho was gunned down at the end of the press conference.

Establishment of the Nunocracy

The black and white uniformed women, after thanking the assassin (who went to great lengths to explain why he couldn't possibly be a Gestapo operative), quickly calmed the crowd with stern looks. Reporters who stayed after the conference for the coffee reported that the women then proceeded to establish a Nunocracy, promising to make Nu Fonix a place where orphans "can live happy lives under [their] gracious supervision."
